JJ Select Senior Underwriter

POSITION SUMMARY:

This position will be working in a niche market within our Personal Lines Division.  The person in this position must be comfortable working with affluent clientele on high value product placement.

This position requires: Excellent understanding of the competition; Exceptional product knowledge and the ability to propose specific program developments; Exertion of Underwriting Authority as it pertains to binding authority, credit levels and exceptions by mentoring the Underwriting Team.  This position will review, analyze, and inspect insurance contracts while collecting competitive data to analyze our program’s place within the market.

 JOB DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Analyze inspection reports, location, risk, credit reports, etc to accept or reject new/renewal property and casualty business. 
  • Performs agency visits to solicit feedback on our service standards, our competition, and to build a professional relationship with our agents.
  • Achieve mutually agreed upon sales goals
  • Comprehend and maintain underwriting manuals for all companies represented
  • Travels to both agencies & company conventions
  • Comfortable discussing team goals and actively participating in achieving these goals
  • Maintain minimum company education requirements
  • Adhere to company-wide minimum service standards
  • Knowledge of the independent agency system and economics – assess the capacity of market, territory and individual agencies to identify and act on growth opportunities.  
  • Develop and maintain effective relationships with business partners.
  • Demonstrate accountability for the assigned territory by being innovative and identifying and implementing opportunities for improvement in results. 
  • Performs other duties and responsibilities as required.
    • Directs and leads the work of their team and teammates                                                          
    • Build professional relationships w/ our agents, market and sell their products to meet the product’s premium projections
    • Perform agency visits to solicit feedback on programs, service, etc.                                        
    • Set premium expectations
    • Obtain competitor data to analyze how our programs fit with regards to:
      • Rate, Policy Form, Ease of Use etc.
  • Monitor product and know who the competition is and where our markets fit                     
  • Participate in setting premium goals for each product by company                                                                                                                                      

 Responsibilities:

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

 EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:   

  • 5 years of insurance experience, underwriting experience preferred. 
    • AND an RMI degree or CPCU, or PLCS, or a graduate degree
  • OR 7 years of experience in P&C Underwriting or related field
  • Personal Lines experience and experience with affluent clientele/High Value Product experience is preferred.

  • Computer experience, MS Word & Excel experience required
  • Minimum 40wpm typing speed
  • Team Player and mentor to Production Assistants, Associate Underwriter and Underwriters
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills

  • Interest in selling products and services based on customer needs
  • Ability to clearly and effectively present (both written and verbal) to external business partners, management and internal business partners. 
  • Exhibits a professional appearance when representing the organization during agency visits or meetings.
  • Strong knowledge of the Personal Lines Industry.
  • Basic knowledge of affluent client base and high value products
  • Knowledge of Personal Lines Products – ability to differentiate J&J products/services from competitors. 
  • Strong negotiation skills.

 SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:  None

 EQUIPMENT TO BE USED:  Multiple data entry programs, copier machine, and other standard office equipment.  Software:  Power Point, AS400, Image Right, Faxsys, Word, Excel, ACT, e-mail, Adobe Acrobat Reader,  various industry software

 TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS:  Must sit be able to sit for long hours and read a computer screen

 TYPICAL MENTAL DEMANDS: Must be able to make prudent decisions, know where and when to ask for assistance, and posses a certain degree of creativity. One must also be able to maintain composure in highly stressful situations.
